TRISO Fuel

Tri-structural isotropic particles — the poppy-seed-sized fuel form at the core of modular high-temperature reactors.

Each TRISO particle wraps a uranium kernel in three ceramic layers plus a pyrolytic carbon buffer, forming its own miniature containment. Failure rates measured under DOE AGR programs are below 10⁻⁵.

The particles are dispersed in graphite compacts or pebbles; individual particle failure does not propagate. That mechanical decoupling is why gigasite deployment is thinkable at all.

Neutronically, TRISO cores admit a scale-separation that maps cleanly onto the spectral basis: kernel-level cross sections × ensemble-level flux modes.
